“Science” defined

7 03 2010

Friends, have you ever wondered what the meaning of “science” really is?  I mean, have you ever stood around scratching your head wondering why the world is in such a mess when there are so many scientific experts on the case?

Well, I have and I think I’ve discovered the answer.  It’s so simple you’ll kick yourself.

You see the etymology of the word itself is the answer.  In Average Joe speak, this means that the very definition of the word “science” tells us why things are so screwed up.  Here’s a tidbit from the Online Etyology Dictionary.  http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=science&searchmode=none

Does this Scientist look happy and content to you?

Science: …from L. scientia “knowledge,” from sciens (gen. scientis), prp. of scire “to know,” probably originally “to separate one thing from another, to distinguish,” related to scindere “to cut, divide,” from PIE base *skei- (cf. Gk. skhizein “to split, rend, cleave,” Goth. skaidan, O.E. sceadan “to divide, separate;”

Yes dear friends….the very definition of “science” seems to indicate that it’s purpose is to separate us from the truth, from one another, from connection to a whole (holy?) reality….

Hmmm.  Is it worth it?

Head Scratchers

28 02 2010

It’s a good thing I have so much practice standing around scratching my head.  This whole blog set-up experience is really something.  It could be that I’m not very disciplined about reading instructions…

Welcome to OddlyTrue

27 02 2010

Well, here we are at Average Joe Citizen’s OddlyTrue blog.

I’m glad you’re here.  Can you see my picture? (WordPress calls it a Gravatar, ie, graphic avatar.  Very clever people at WordPress).

If you’ve read the About page, you’ll realize that I’ve been standing around scratching my head since I was a tyker and now that I’m a mature adult, I can start blogging about the experience.  Are you stoked for it?

Don’t worry.  It’ll start out slowly but eventually a new reality will dawn on you and you’ll be glad that I paved the way by sharing my OddlyTrue thoughts with you as well as other miscellaneous head-scratching moments.
